Superhero Tax Breaks?
Empire Magazine did an article about the top 10 wealthiest superhero characters… Poor Peter Parker (Spider-Man) was at the bottom of the list. He’s a freelance photographer for a newspaper, after all. Trying to make rent in New York City of all places. Tony Stark (Iron Man) made the #1 spot as the wealthiest hero, followed closely behind by Bruce Wayne (The Batman).
But as fascinating as all this is for all of you, it was actually someone’s comment (to the article) that really caught my attention. This comic book fan felt it necessary to adjust for, of all things, tax breaks. Or rather, the hero’s inability to claim them. “Batman can’t claim tax breaks on the batmobile,” he noted, and “Iron Man can’t claim the $7 billion for his suits as a business expense.”
Then it got me thinking.
What if a superhero did try to claim their special suits, equipment, and vehicles as tax deductions?
Obviously, they can’t, because then they’d reveal their secret identities to the IRS.
Hmm… but who would really care? Maybe they could get away with it. Maybe their file would just get lost in an endless vault of other tax returns. We’d all be none the wiser.
Except… unless… one day a super villain got really smart, broke into the IRS, and searched through all those tax returns and actually discovered Bruce Wayne claiming a deduction on the batmobile.
Eureeka!
A super hero’s identity is revealed because of a tax deduction.
I think that could be a pretty funny premise for a book or screenplay idea. lol.
